High-Frequency Word Assessment

High-Frequency Word Assessment

Assessment Procedure:

. Word Recognition Test

Instructions:

1. Present the student with a list of 20-30 high-frequency words appropriate to their grade level.

2. Ask the student to read the words aloud.

3. Mark any words that the student struggles with, mispronounces, or hesitates on.

Scoring:

o Fluent Recognition: If the student reads a word without hesitation or errors, mark it as correct.

o Error Identification: Record errors (e.g., skipped words, mispronunciations).

Evaluation:

o For younger or beginner readers, you might assess their ability to recognize high-frequency words accurately and quickly.

o For older students, you may include sentences or passages with high-frequency words and assess their ability to read fluently.

2. Spelling Test

Instructions:

1. Dictate the high-frequency words to the student one at a time.

2. Ask the student to write the words as you say them.

3. Check the spelling and identify any errors.

Evaluation: Focus on the student’s ability to accurately spell high-frequency words. For beginning writers, accuracy with common sight words (like the, and, is) is critical.

3. Sentence Production

Instructions:

1. Present the student with a set of high-frequency words (e.g., go, will, can).

2. Ask the student to create a sentence using each word.

3. Assess their understanding of how these words function within a sentence.

Scoring: Evaluate whether the student uses the word correctly in context and whether the sentence is grammatically correct.

4. Fluency with High-Frequency Words

Instructions:

Provide a short passage that contains high-frequency words, and ask the student to read it aloud.

Scoring: Record the student’s reading speed (words per minute) and accuracy. Fluency should also include how well the student handles high-frequency words while reading naturally.
