Assessment Criteria
Assessment Criteria
1. Words Read Per Minute (WPM)
Benchmark Goals: Use grade-level fluency benchmarks to compare the student's WPM.
o For example:
Grade 1: 30–50 words per minute (WPM) for a beginning-level passage.
Grade 2: 60–90 WPM.
Grade 3: 90–120 WPM.
Students who read fewer than the expected number of words per minute may need further practice with fluency activities.
2. Accuracy Accuracy
Calculation: Determine the percentage of correctly read words (i.e., total words read minus errors, divided by total words in the passage).
o For example, if a student reads 50 words but makes 5 errors, their accuracy is 50−550=90%\frac{50 - 5}{50} = 90\%5050−5=90%.
Benchmark: Aim for at least 90–95% accuracy for students to be considered fluent in the text. If accuracy is lower, the student may need to focus on specific word recognition or decoding skills.
3. Expression and Phrasing
Prosody: Evaluate whether the student reads with natural phrasing, using appropriate intonation, stress, and pauses based on punctuation. A fluent reader will typically read with appropriate expression (i.e., not word-by-word) and with phrasing that mirrors natural speech.
Scale: Rate from 1 to 4 based on expression (e.g., 1 = monotone, 2 = some phrasing, 3 = appropriate phrasing, 4 = expressive, natural reading)
4. Comprehension
Comprehension Questions: After reading, assess the student's understanding of the passage.
Use a simple rubric:
o 1 point for each correct answer.
o Total points help you understand whether low fluency may be affecting comprehension.
